During the winter months, it’s especially hard to roll out of bed into the uninviting, intimidating cold air that gathered in your room all night. That blanket is your best friend, so when you finally get out of bed, it’s tempting to crawl back in. To help energize yourself as part of a fresh morning routine, here are some ways to wake up your senses for a productive day.
Your willpower is highest in the morning after your brain and body is refreshed by a good night’s sleep. It will have an immense influence on how you feel when you wake up in the morning. So what’s the next step after waking up that will you feel your best for the rest of the day?
Here are some following tips for a fresh morning routine.
1. Drink a glass of water when you wake up.
Have a glass of water or bottled water next to you before you go to sleep. When you wake up in the morning, take a gulp. Try this every time you wake up. Hydration is key and vital to having a healthy mood. Plus, it forces you to sit up. As you finish your morning routine, make sure you finish off the glass!
2. Invite the morning light.
When you wake up, open your curtains to let natural light filter in. Depending on where you live or where your bedroom is located, you can partially keep your window curtains or blinds open for sunlight to peek in at night. If not, turn on the brightest light. You can use a digital timer to set your lamp to turn on.

“When people are exposed to sunlight or very bright artificial light in the morning, their nocturnal melatonin production occurs sooner, and they enter into sleep more easily at night… The melatonin rhythm phase advancement caused by exposure to bright morning light has been effective against insomnia, premenstrual syndrome, and seasonal affective disorder (SAD)… Moderately high serotonin levels result in more positive moods and a calm yet focused mental outlook.”
3. Do breathing exercises in bed.
While you’re lying down or sitting up, take 5 minutes and do a breathing or meditation exercise. You can use an app like “Stop, Breathe & Think” to guide you. Once you finish, you’ll have better mental focus and intention to start you day. This one takes a lot of practice, so even if you don’t perfect it, just keep trying to implement this in your daily morning routine.
4. Stretch in bed.
Set aside 10 minutes to stretch in bed. The point is to get your blood flowing without too much adrenaline. It warms you up too! It sets your energy for a calm, relaxed morning.
5. Spend at least 10 minutes listening to music.
Create a morning playlist that transitions from calm songs to uplifting, vibrant songs. This gentle way of waking up the senses is sure to start off your morning with positive vibes. Choose one thing you want to clean up in the morning. It can be as simple as washing the dishes or organizing your bag before you head out for the day. It’ll get your blood warmed up, your mental juices flowing, and you’ll have something clean. That’s a great way to start off the day!
