Curating for “Do Good” box made us get all the feels. We were touched by This Bar Saves Lives, their mission is to feed others who need it most. When someone buys a bar, the proceeds go to their non-profit partner, who packs up and supplies food for communities going through malnutrition. Their bars are delicious too! We crave them at the office. For our “Do Good” box subscribers, you were able to be a part of something bigger. We are honored to have them collaborate with us! Meet the Maker for our Craftly “Do Good” box: This Bar Saves Lives. We’ve interviewed Ryan Devlin, one of its founders.
Can you tell us your story of how This Bar Saves Lives came to be?
This Bar Saves Lives was born after Todd and I went on a humanitarian trip to Liberia. We toured a camp where we saw children suffering from severe malnutrition. Beautiful, innocent little kids… just wasting away. It was one of those things that when you see it, you can’t un-see.
The incredible thing is that severe malnutrition is a totally treatable condition. A simple regimen of food aid will take a child from near death to happy and healthy in just weeks. It was inspiring! So we decided to take action, by connecting people in the US with those across the world. Nutrition for nutrition. Our motto is, “We eat together.”
What is your mission?
Our mission is to create the best damn bar out there (I’m talking non-GMO, gluten-free, fair trade, and ridiculously delicious) that also provides the best emergency food aid abroad.
For every bar sold, we give life-saving food aid to a child in need.
What inspires you to give back and why?
It’s pretty simple really: it feels good to do good.
Guilt isn’t a strong motivator, but happiness is. It makes me happy to help out, in big ways and small. Small actions add up to a huge impact. Now, as a dad, I think a lot about my son and other kids around the world.
Kids are kids, wherever they happen to have been born. If they’re suffering and I can help, then I’m going to help!
What’s the most exciting experience you’ve had since your business started?
Can I say all of it?! This Bar Saves Lives started out as a crazy idea and is now a real social enterprise that has donated enough food aid to help save THOUSANDS of lives around the world.
That’s pretty exciting.
If you’re going to force me to choose one moment, I’d say when I held in my hands the first batch of bars ever produced. Those Wild Blueberry Pistachio bars represented a dream coming true… and also the potential to change lives around the world.
Tell us about the Madagascar Vanilla Almond & Honey bar we featured in our April box!
Well, I tasted a LOT of variations on it. As did Kristen Bell, who is kind of our Chief Taste Tester ;). When I say that we want to give you the best food possible, I mean it.
The Madagascar Vanilla Almond & Honey bar, our most popular flavor, is a decadent balance of sweet and savory, with subtle notes of vanilla, honey, and a kick of sea salt.
And pro tip: if you warm it up a little bit, it tastes just like a healthy rice crispy treat. You’re welcome!
Can you give us an example of what NOT to do when running a business?
Don’t let bold ideas die because of over-planning. My motto is, “Fire, Aim, Ready.” Think big, then fire! Once it’s out there you can make adjustments and learn by getting real feedback, rather than strategize an idea to death in your own echo chamber.
What do you think the world needs the most right now?
I think the world needs more reminders that we’re all in this together. The current state of US politics and the ugliness of selfish thinking is doing real damage.
If we’re only focused on ourselves, and we’re building walls to keep the world out (literal and metaphorical) then we’re closing ourselves off to the incredible power of compassion, shared experience, and the good that sparks from interconnectedness. Can we just forget about walls and borders and maps for a second? We’re all in this together!
