GIN TRIVIA

History of gin
Gin is often seen as quintessentially British. However, just as many of Britain's national favorites, gin did not originate from its own shores. In fact, if you don't count the Italian monks who are thought to have used juniper berries as flavorings in distilled spirits back in the 11th century, it's Holland that's credited as the birthplace of gin.

The Dutch chemist who went by the name of Fanciscus Sylvius is thought to be the ‘inventor’ of gin, having started prescribing a juniper-based distilled spirit called genièvre for medicinal purposes around 1550. His juniper berry distillate seemed an effective remedy for a variety of ailments, such as the plague.

The English first got their hands on what they called genever while fighting Spain in Holland during the Thirty Years’ War (1618–1648). The soldiers drank it to calm their nerves before going into battle, leading to the commonly used term Dutch Courage. When they returned back to England after the war, they took their newly found favorite spirit with them, introducing it at home.

Different types of gin
For all gin counts, that the most important requirement is that the spirit tastes like juniper berries. These juniper berries need to make up at least 51% percent of the added ingredients. In addition, there are numerous other flavors: an average gin today contains between 10 and 20 botanicals.

A bottle of gin will generally mention "London dry" or "distilled”, depending on the production process that was used. The difference is in the regulations:

London dry gin consists of grain alcohol and botanicals (herbs and spices). The botanicals must be distilled directly and simultaneously. After this, only water may be added. London dry gin is the more classical type of gin and tastes in general a bit more bitter.
