TEQUILA TRIVIA
Tequila is a distilled alcoholic beverage made from the blue agave plant. It was first produced in Mexico around the city of Tequila in the 16th century. However, the indigenous Mexicans had been brewing a milk alcohol from the agave called "pulque" for thousands of years. There are two types of tequilas - mixtos and 100% agave. All tequilas must be at least 51% agave. The quality of tequila is largely determined by the quality and quantity of agave used in the fermentation process.
"Mezcal" is commonly known as the name for any alcoholic distillation made from the agave plant. All tequilas are mezcals, but not all mezcals are tequilas. Tequilas are mezcals made only from the blue agave.
There are three main categories of tequila made from 100% agave: Blanco, Reposado and Añejo. The flavor of each of these types of tequila is largely determined by how it is distilled and how long it is aged in oak barrels.Each flavor lends itself to a different way of drinking, from mixing and making cocktails to sipping and enjoying on its own.
Blanco, or Silver, is tequila in its most purified form. Sometimes referred to by distillers as the 'essence of tequila', it has a clear color and is usually bottled immediately after the last distillation. It is not aged in oak, and the flavor you drink comes from the agave, although fermentation and distillation techniques have profound effects on the flavor profile.
